Sapphire Nautilus Pendant

I have had this finished for a while but just got it photographed and in the shop this week. I wanted to make a more abstract piece that combined the idea of a wave and a spiral seashell. The pendant made of pure silver and is sculpted on both sides. I made bezels that look like barnacles with real sapphires in shades of watery blue.

I based the shape on a nautilus, which is an amazing living fossil. It has a shell made of chambers of increasing size. As the animal grows it closes off its previous chamber, resulting in a beautiful, logarithmic spiral.
